Read an Excerpt:
Portrait of Lois Mailou Jones by Faith RinggoldLois Mailou Jones' artistic development is intimately connected to her exposure to diverse cultures. The following brief survey of a career that spanned over six decades is an attempt to uncover the complexity of Jones' creative development and to examine some of the artistic and political choices she made in direct relation to her travels to Europe, Haiti and the African continent. In fact, crucial stylistic changes occurred as she integrated the knowledge and experience gathered through her exposure to these different cultures, and her canvases reflect her enduring passion for people and places.
--Catherine Bernard, June 2003
