Categories of Applicants: Applicants for the Art With Kids Grant are teachers, teaching parents or MFA or PHD candidates in art history or the visual arts; with a solid background in the art of the African Diaspora. All applicants must have teaching experience with elementary school audiences. Grants cannot be offered to Trustees or Selection Committee members, their relatives or employers. The Art With Kids Grant will require the participation of a host elementary school audience. That school will be selected by application to the Foundation. To be eligible that school must be in the Metropolitan New York / New Jersey / Pennsylvania Tri-State Area.

Applicants for Foundation grants are selected without respect to their race, creed or color.

Terms and Conditions

The recipient of the Art With Kids Grant must complete the proposed three lesson unit presentations during the twelve-month period following the announcement of acceptance of the grant. Grants will be issued in May 2007, and therefore the completion of work will come due before May of the following year, 2007. The deadline for submission for this grant is February 28, 2007.

The Foundation and the Host school(s) will participate in an on-going evaluation of the Art With Kids Grant program to ensure that the cultural and educational goals of the kids, the school and the Foundation are successfully met.

The Grantee for the Art With Kids Grant program can expect the full cooperation of the Foundation and its Trustees as well as the use of it’s library, art archives, educational materials and services.

Awards/Payments

Recipient(s) of the Art With Kids Grant will be notified by by May 30, 2007 and the award winner will be announced at the Foundation's annual meeting on June 25, 2007. Upon signing of contracts and approval of the Lesson Plan for the Museum visit the Grant Recipient will receive $200.00. Recipients of the Art With Kids Grant will also receive the following:

  • $400.00 for the slide lecture, art making workshop, and museum trip presentation on one of the featured Master Artists;
  • $800.00 for the three lesson presentations on two of the featured Master Artists;
  • $1,200.00 for presentations on three featured Master Artists;
  • $1,600.00 for presentations on Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Aaron Douglas, and Jacob Lawrence.
In addition, a stipend of up to $200.00 is available for miscellaneous expenses and supplies. Prior Foundation approval and receipts are required for reimbursement.

The total award may be up to $2,000.00 for a single Grant Recipient. Payments will be made after successful completion of the three lesson unit along with the Foundation's receipt of completed evaluation forms. These evaluation forms must be secured from the kids and teachers at the conclusion of each presentation.

The presentation dates will be scheduled in collaboration with the Principal and the Presenter. The Anyone Can Fly Foundation must be kept up to date about those changes. Any changes in presentation scheduling must be mutually agreeable to all parties.

Art With Kids Grant Application Guidelines

Applicants, Host Schools and Museum Venues for 2007 must be located in the New York/ New Jersey/ Pennsylvania / Tri-State Area.

Instructions for Applicants

Applications are to be arranged in numerical order (documents 1-4 as listed below) and presented in a report binder or portfolio. Place a label bearing your name and the name of the artist(s) you plan to present on the outside cover. Please send 5 identical full sets of the application binder.

Applicants for this grant are required to provide 5 copies of the following materials consisting of no more than three typewritten pages each. Applications that differ from the described format below will be rejected without prior notice.

  1. Application Form must be completely filled out and signed, including a complete street address and mailing address, telephone number, cell phone number, fax number, and email address.
  2. Resume or biographical statement no longer than two typewritten pages.
  3. Sample one page lesson plans introducing any of these Master Artists: Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Aaron Douglas, or Jacob Lawrence. The unit should be a 40-minute gallery talk at a specific museum in the Metropolitan New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania Tri-State Area in the winter of 2007.
  4. Submit three letters of recommendation from a professor, administrator or other person who is knowledgeable of the applicant's performance in the area of art of the African Diaspora as well as teaching and presenting art making and viewing art with Elementary School children.
The Foundation will provide the association between the grantee and a designated host elementary school. The Host school for 2007 will be selected from the Metropolitan New York/New Jersey/ Pennsylvania Tri-State Area. In addition, existing relationships with schools within the Area will be considered.
