| Cuesta Benberry is the recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Scholar's Lifetime Achievement Award for her groundbreaking research on the history of African-American quilt making.
Cuesta Benberry's research has uncovered the centuries
long and richly diverse history of African-American quilt making in American Art. Her life and work is an inspiration to all who know her. She had the vision to focus on a humble body of homegrown creativity powerful enough to survive the Middle Passage and slavery to inspire contemporary artists working both in and out of the quilting tradition with a cultural determination to keep the art of
their mothers alive and well.
A conversation between Cuesta Benberry and Faith Ringgold follows with an onsite live taping by Barbara Wallace and filming by Grace Matthews on August 18, 2004, in St. Louis,
Missouri. Also included is an illustrated transcript in html format.
